8X8, Acrylic on Canvas, Portrait

This is the first piece in a series. his piece was inspired by a song by Alicia Keys’ titled Girl on Fire . The fire in her hands symbolizes the trials that she faces whether they are internal struggles or external conflicts, she chooses to confidently turn away and not focus on them. 11”X14”, Acrylic on Canvas.

This piece was inspired by Tupacs “The Rose that Grew From Concrete”. The girl is the rose and her environment is the concrete. Growing up in the “hood”, “urban area”, “concrete jungle” or whatever you want to call it was/is a challenge and blooming in those circumstances is also a challenge. So shoutout to all the kids who don’t allow their negative experiences or where they came from to determine who they are or where they are going! 11”X14”, Acrylic on Canvas.

So I really REAALLLYY love the moon so I decided to do this piece based off of my love for the moon and it’s phases. Phases represent change and throughout the phases that the moon goes through it is still the same. The moon is a “faithful witness in the skies”. 11”X14”, Acrylic on Canvas.

They’re so many quotes to describe this beautiful process in a much better way than I can. “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty” - Maya Angelou “Don’t diss the caterpillar then sweat the butterfly”. “Time went by and turned you into a butterfly”. 11”X14”, Acrylic on Canvas.

Growing up as a girl with naturally curly, wavy or kinky hair, we are taught to straighten our hair or put chemicals so that we do not look "too black" and to conform to the white standards of beauty. Thus, this theme was chosen to embrace natural hair and turn down the negative stereotypes that have been passed down from many generations. Every girl in this series hair was turned into something from nature to embrace the beauty of natural hair and prove that hair is much more than dead cells

As humans we deal with a variety of emotions, feelings etc . sometimes we may not really be able to accurately express why or how we are feeling, we try our best to hide it, but deep inside we are hurting, we are crying a bowl or maybe drowning in our tears. individuals we come into contact with regularly may notice the changes, but then there are always those who have certain perceptions. 24X30, Acrylic on Canvas
